This component requires hydraulic fluid to lubricate the system and keep it working perfectly. The John Deere riding mower’s transmission system is a critical component that keeps the machine running. Also, ensure the tensioner arm remains lubricated so that it can move smoothly. So, if you notice the mower’s drive belts fall off, and the belts appear in good condition, the tension pully is most likely faulty.įix: Replace any worn-out pulleys with new ones. The tensioner pulley is typically plastic and is prone to wear after prolonged use. Damaged Tensioner PulleyĪ tensioner pulley is in charge of keeping the drive belt in place. All that is left to do is confirm that everything is working as it should, and that’s all your tractor is good to go again.Įxpert Tip: Ensure the drive belt is properly attached to the lawn tractor’s pulley system to prevent the belt from falling off. Remove the old belt and put in the new one. When done, use your socket to loosen the bolts so the belt can come off. Next, loosen the bolt holding the steering column, as that allows you to remove the other part of the belt. Then remove the engine pulley the belt should be visible between the shaft and steering column. For this task, you will need an air gun, sockets, a wrench, and a replacement belt.įirst, raise your tractor slightly and activate the emergency brake. If you notice your machine’s engine is running, but the wheels don’t spin, the main culprit could be a worn-out or damaged belt.įix: Replacing a bad drive belt is straightforward and should take about thirty minutes. So, if the drive belt on your mower is damaged, the machine won’t move forward or reverse. Defective Drive BeltĪ drive belt is a lengthy, continuous loop of flexible material that transfers power from the lawn tractor’s engine to the wheels. You may have to purchase a new mower if the damage is severe. For this reason, I recommend consulting a skilled repairer for assistance. If this crucial component fails, you’ll notice your lawnmower moving slowly or in only one direction.įix: Unfortunately, you may be unable to repair the transmission. The transmission of the John Deere lawn mower helps control the machine’s speed and direction. However, if the engine doesn’t pick up, you must buy a new mower battery. A dead battery will be unable to power your machine’s engine, and if you can’t power up your engine, you won’t be able to ride forward or reverse.įix: If the battery is dead, I recommend charging up the battery and testing if the engine responds. The catch is, you need the clean trails as fire breaks before you burn the thorn bushes. The first reason your riding lawnmower won’t move may be a dead or failing battery. The pile of thorn trees is ready to burn. Here is a trail that was cleaned out with loppers, saw, etc. A 4 gallon sprayer with brush killer along the trail will keep down maintenance. Once you get the trail "clean", a lawn tractor works fairly well. If you put in a lot of trails, a Billygoat Outback or DR mower does good on smaller brush and a Stihl brushcutter with buzz saw blade for bigger thorn trees leaves no staubs. I spray the stumps with Garlon 4 and diesel to keep the brush from re-sprouting. I used to exclusively use the JD2305 with 4' brusher, but it chops up the thorns and you have a zillion pieces to clean up that go throug the tires instead of dragging the sticker bush or thorn tree off the trail. I have a JD15 cart that I put the chain saw, 1" Corona loppers (for brush cutting), and other tools in for brushing and sawing out the initial trail. I finally replaced my 2 front tires after about 20 patches in each, from running over chunks of Hawthorne. I must maintain 2 miles of trails on the 100 acres up here. Being able to look up parts on the JD web site and having the CD repair manual helps. By the time I made the 4th trip an hour each way for parts, I was ready to go buy a Husqvarna lawn tractor, but I finally got it going. Put the pulley on and SNAP went the spring that holds the tension. I got that back together and then there was a horrible squeeling noise when I put the deck back on. I had to remove the deck and prop up all 4 wheels way up in the air so I could get under there and see what was going on. It was same as above, the thing just came loose because the dealer did not re-install it right. I don't have a D140, but the belt came off my LX188 lawn tractor.
